The Benchmarker’s Dilemma
Improving benchmark scores is relatively straightforward once the target is known. The difficult part is deciding what should be optimized in the first place.
Increasing scores can be expensive, but researchers and developers have a clearer playbook for optimization than they do for creating meaningful benchmarks that measure progress at the current frontier of artificial intelligence.
Independent evaluation of language models is often underestimated. Designing evaluations that remain useful as models improve is difficult, particularly when the goal is to distinguish genuine advances from systems optimized for the measurement itself.
This creates a dilemma for benchmarking: scores can provide a clear way to compare models, but the value of those scores depends on whether the benchmark continues to represent meaningful capabilities. Artificial Analysis v5 reflects this broader challenge of developing evaluations that remain informative as language models become more capable.
