Tata Communications plans $450 million investment in 10,000km of AI-ready fiber across India
Tata Communications plans to invest nearly $450 million to build approximately 10,000km (6,213 miles) of long-haul, AI-ready fiber in India.
The company said the project will create one of India's largest AI-ready connectivity networks, supporting demand for next-generation artificial intelligence workloads and data center capacity.
Tata Communications has allocated between $400 million and $450 million for the buildout. The investment is intended to support growth among hyperscale and neocloud providers, AI workloads, digital-native businesses, Global Capability Centers (GCCs), enterprises, and emerging cloud platforms.
Three-phase fiber expansion
The fiber deployment will take place in three phases. The first phase will focus on the Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad-Chennai corridor, which is one of India's major routes for AI and hyperscale development.
Later phases will extend connectivity to emerging data center ecosystems along India's East Coast and in Western India. Planned locations include Vizag, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar, Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), and other strategic sites.
Tata Communications said that connecting these routes and data center clusters to international cable landing stations will enable connectivity between India and major global AI hubs.
“With our planned investments, we are building on our existing strengths to create one of the most comprehensive data center connectivity platforms in the market, positioning us to capture this significant growth opportunity,” said Ganesh Lakshminarayanan, MD and CEO of Tata Communications.
“As we scale, a growing proportion of our expansion is being driven by anchor customer commitments and contracted demand, providing a strong foundation for sustainable growth, efficient capital deployment and long-term value creation.”
The planned fiber system will connect to Tata Communications' global network backbone, which includes 500,000km (310,685 miles) of subsea optical fiber and 200,000km (124,275 miles) of terrestrial fiber.
