Ciena launches $200 million venture fund for next-generation networking startups

July 30, 2026

Ciena has launched a corporate venture capital program to invest in early-stage companies developing next-generation networking technologies.

Called Ciena Ventures, the program will be led by Loai Louis, Ciena’s vice president for corporate development. It begins with an initial tranche of $200 million.

Investment focus

Ciena Ventures will consider investments in several areas, including:

  • Next-generation data center architectures
  • Optical networking technologies
  • Network interconnects
  • Materials
  • Emerging communications technologies

David Rothenstein, Ciena’s executive vice president and chief strategy officer, said that investments through Ciena Ventures are intended to accelerate the development of transformative solutions, support the wider innovation ecosystem, improve Ciena’s visibility into emerging technologies, and help the company expand its portfolio and pursue opportunities in adjacent markets.

Ciena has already invested in Quintessent, a startup developing optical interconnect solutions for AI data centers. Ciena joined Cycle Capital and Goldman Sachs XIG-Industry Ventures in backing Quintessent, which is developing dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) lasers that use gallium arsenide instead of indium phosphide for links between AI clusters. The change addresses supply-chain constraints affecting indium phosphide.

The launch of Ciena Ventures gives the networking vendor a formal vehicle for investing in startups and funds working on technologies that could influence future data center and communications infrastructure.
